PRISON INDUSTRY

Private Sector Prison Industries (PSPI) has a network of prison-run workshops across the UK that provide services to the MOJ and produce a variety of products for the public and private sector – including cell furniture – for the HMP estate. This page summarises the workshop capabilities of PSPI.

Woodworking

Products produced for use by HMP estate:

  • All Whitewood and MDF furniture for HMP.

Products produced for external use:

  • Large range of office furniture, including for government and civil service.

  • Tables, chairs, doors and window frames.

  • Dog kennels, sheds and stables.

Machinery used:

  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology

  • Advanced woodworking equipment

  • Ability to print onto wood

Materials:

  • MDF fire retardant melamine faced white ash

  • Varied wood for external products

  • Prison cell doors, security gates and grilles

Products produced for external use:

  • Stainless steel trolleys, fencing

  • Aluminium double glazing

  • Office storage (e.g. lockers, lock boxes)

Machinery used:

  • Welding and fabrication

  • CNC lathes, mills and conventional CNC machines

  • Powder coating

Materials:

  • Powder coated tube steel, stainless steel.

  • Aluminium.

Plastics

  • Mugs, plates, cutlery

Products produced for external use:

  • Varied products: plastic buckets, ice scrapers, snow shovels

  • Ashtrays, dustpans, containers, chairs

Machinery used:

  • Plastic Shredders

  • Injection moulding machines ranging from 40 tonne to 850 tonne capacity

Materials:

  • Most common plastics: PP, PS, ABS, HIPS, PE (HDPE, LDPE), PU

  • Garment Sewing Data (GSD) system

Printing and Graphics

Products produced for use by HMP estate

  • Signage and other internal printing needs

Products produced for external use:

  • Leaflets, brochures

  • Signage

  • All business stationary for Timpsons

Processes used:

  • Litho printing, printing on to plastic, textiles.

  • Cutting, folding, trimming

Machinery used:

  • Litho and Digital Presses

  • Laminators and Binders

  • Vinyl printers

  • Textile hotbed printers

  • Badge doming machines

Recycling

Facilities:

  • Full MRF centre (Materials Recovery Facility)

 

Waste streams separated and sold on:

  • Cardboard

  • Mattress bags

  • Shrink Wrap

  • Tertapak / milk containers / orange juice cartons

 

Internal Recycling:

Plastic prison products (mugs, plates, knives and forks) are separated and fed back into the plastics workshop.

 

External Recycling:

The facilities are hired by external companies for the remanufacture of computers, headphones, consoles and small domestic appliances. Also there is a unit for wire stripping.
